20. Define Solution Manager.

  • Organizations have tried to manage their software requirements through in-house IT divisions. The typical activities of an IT department involve project management, support/help desk, knowledge transfer, and change management. These activities are managed using different tools. Often these tools are from different vendors; and therefore, lack integration. Thus, a need was felt for a consolidated tool that covered the entire IT activities of SAP implementation as well as those of post implementation.
  • Many different tools were developed to manage implementation activities initially. However, these tools were not tightly integrated with the SAP system. Often these tools were implemented outside the system in the form of excel or word files. Moreover, project tracking was done using MS Excel sheets or MS project. Therefore, a need was felt to have a structured platform that should function as a central repository for all the implementation related activities.
  • This lead to the development of Solution Manager, which helps in managing various typical activities of IT department, such as project management, support/help desk, knowledge transfer, and change management. All the implementation activities are now routed through Solution Manager. Moreover, from ECC 6.0 onwards, usage of Solution Manager is made mandatory for certain key activities, such as patch upgrades and system installation. As an integrated tool, it helps to reduce the total cost of ownership.
